Why Ditch Seed Oil?

Updated: 7 days ago

Say no to seed oil, omega-6 fatty acids and inflammation

Southern Grounds has made a bold move towards healthier cooking by switching to olive oil and tallow as our primary cooking oils.

So why are we ditching seed oil?

Many vegetable and seed oils are highly processed and can be detrimental to health:

  • Often extracted using chemical solvents

  • High in omega-6 fatty acids (linoleic acid), which can promote inflammation when consumed in excess

  • More prone to oxidation, potentially leading to the formation of harmful compounds when heated

  • Less stable at high temperatures compared to traditional cooking fats and often lacks the beneficial nutrients found in less processed oils

Why pick EVOO and Tallow?

The Power of Olive Oil

Olive oil, particularly extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), is a nutritional powerhouse:

  • Rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats

  • Packed with antioxidants that fight inflammation

  • Contains oleic acid, which may have anticancer properties

  • Helps lower blood pressure and prevent LDL cholesterol oxidation

EVOO has the lowest oxidation rate of any cooking oil, making it less prone to producing harmful free radicals when heated. It's also versatile enough for sautéing, baking, and cold applications like salad dressings.

The Benefits of Tallow

Beef tallow, a traditional cooking fat, offers unique advantages:

  • High smoke point, ideal for high-heat cooking

  • Rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K

  • Contains heart-healthy monounsaturated fats

  • Provides CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), which may aid body composition

Tallow's stability at high temperatures makes it perfect for frying and searing, while its neutral flavor allows the natural taste of foods to shine through.

By switching to olive oil and tallow, we're providing our customers with more stable, less processed, and nutrient-dense cooking fats.

At Southern Grounds, we're committed to using ingredients that not only taste great but also support your health. Our switch to olive oil and tallow reflects this dedication to quality and wellness.
